Hello, sorry if this has been asked, but I did several searches and looked through dozens of posts and couldn't find it.
I want to insert (in a field?) page numbers above my text of my novel. Is this possible? I am satisfied with the visual effect of my page layout the way it is, and I don't want to take away space from the top of each page (within current margins) to insert the page numbers. That adds ~20 pages to an already very long novel of 220,000 words and 330+ pages. I am using OO Version 4, in Windows 10 on PC (MS-DOS). I have not yet created my front matter (title page, legal disclaimers, acknowledgements, etc.) and I figured these can be unnumbered pages after I insert the page numbers starting with 1 at the beginning of my story. Or does it not work like this? Would it be better to create the front matter first and then start numbering where the text begins? (Also, I suppose it's easy to insert pages at the beginning: just put the cursor before the first character and Insert > Page Break (please correct me if I'm wrong).) I seem to remember using page numbers above the text in my first novel, written in OO 3(.3?). What is the fastest and easiest way to do this, with minimal or no disruption to my layout? Much appreciated.

Re: Inserting Page Numbers above top margin
The way to insert page numbers above the text is to use a header and put a page number field in it. However, inserting a header will move the text down. You can adjust for this by adjusting the top margin using the menu Format -> Page.
So what you need to do is insert the front matter using a page style different than the page style you use in the bulk of the document. You probably have the Default page style in the document now. At the end of front matter, put in a page break and define it so the following page style is the Default style.

Re: Inserting Page Numbers above top margin
Thank you for your quick reply! I thought about doing just that, moving the top margin up to allow for the page numbers and a space between them and the top of the text as it is now. Do you know exactly how much space to add? It would have to be exactly two lines' worth of height, but exactly how many inches is that? Or do we just have to do it by trial-and-error and hope that the page count comes out exactly the same as before? My font is Times New Roman, size 12. Is there a digital way to measure this precisely? I counted 49 lines in roughly 9.4" of text as-is now, or about 0.192" vertically per line. So I could start by adding 0.38" to the top margin (if it will allow that much) and make micro-adjustments from there. But wait...the new header may not be exactly two spaces above the start of the text. Can we know how much space the program adds between the bottom of the header box and the top of the text? Other than trial-and-error, of course. In other words, would it add more than two spaces if I type the page numbers and then return once in the header? I want to do this right; I can't mess this up irreparably.

The Page Style dialog where you set the page size and margins has a Header tab where you can set the height and spacing for the header.michaelelias wrote:Can we know how much space the program adds between the bottom of the header box and the top of the text?
