How to skip the section

Post by Lawrence594 »

Hi
I'm working on a recipe binder. I figured out how to create an alphabetical index, but how do I tell the index to skip the section (desert, main course, drinks, etc) pages shagleazar
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Can you detail a bit? I don't understand what you're trying to avoid.

This User is trying to omit a heading level - hopefully a higher one, from an Index or Table of Content.

So the document should be structured

Code: Select all

Main Course (in, say Heading 1)
  Roast Beef (say Heading 2)
  Lamb chops (Heading 2)
Desert (Heading 1)
  Ice cream (Heading 2)
  Profiteroles (Heading 2)
and the Heading 1 items are not required to show up in a ToC or Index.

If its not a heading level, but one particular part you want excluded... then you can hide text in the index (or anywhere else) by setting Format menu/Character/Font effects/Hidden. Or you can create a paragraph style with the same hidden Font property and apply that style to the paragraphs. It will be undone if you update the index though and you'll have to do it over.

Alphabetical indexes are created from index entries. As far as I know, there is no option to skip any index entries. If you don't want an index entry in the index, then you can delete the index entry. First, select View > Field Shadings so the index entries will be shaded in the text. To delete an index entry, click in front of the index entry in the text and select Edit > Index Entry. That opens the Edit Index Entry dialog where you can click the Delete button to delete the index entry.
