Headers and footers are controlled through the Page styles, so you have to apply a different page style to the first page than to subsequent pages.
Save a copy of your document in case you make a dramatic mistake!
First, click at the end of the text that you want on the first page. Select the menu item Insert -> Manual Break. In the dialog, select Page Break and in the Style list select Default. Click OK and you will have a page break separating your first and second pages.
Select the menu item Format -> Styles and Formatting. A small dialog will appear with five icons near the top left. Click the fourth from the left, which brings up the Page styles. From the list at the bottom of the dialog select All. You will now see a list of all of the Page styles. Among them should be Default and First Page. Move the cursor to the first page of your document and then double click on the First Page style in the Styles and Formatting dialog. This applies the First Page style to the first page of your document.
Select the menu item Insert -> Header -> Default. All of the pages that use the Default page style, everything from page 2 onward, will now have a header. Anything you type in that header will appear on all of those pages.
You can tune the page properties of the first page, such as margins, by right clicking on the First Page style in the Styles and Formatting dialog and selecting Modify.

Can you post the document here, or its first three pages? It is hard to know what is going on without working with the actual file.

If you do not want to post the document, can you describe what goes wrong with the pagination after you insert the page break? You should check the margin settings of the original document, which I assumed uses the Default page style, and make sure the revised document has the same margins.

the margins all set by the page style default. It moved the second page words down so now the page number was in the middle of the page between paragraphs from top of the second page and bottom second page (if that makes sense to you) Thanks

I have no idea how page margins would do that. It sounds like you put the page number in the main text instead of in the header or footer. Headers are always above the main text and footers are always below the main text. They are never in the middle of the main text.

You don't need to upload your document. Create a new document using dummy text that shows the problem(s) and upload that.

If you want automatic Page Numbers (what will not be shifted together with the main text), and when you want different layout of some parts of the document (Title page, TOC, etc...), then you must use the Headers/Footers, and the the Page Styles.

And use the native, international satndard ODF file formats for your documents. The MS Word .doc format can not handle the Page Styles.

The Styles are the most valuable feature of the Apache OpenOffice and the LibreOffice.

Open Document Format - ODF - is the format that OpenOffice, and other applications such as LibreOffice, use to store documents. Save your Writer documents as .ods.odt which is the default Save format.

.ods - for the Calc documents,
.odt - for Writer documents.

You have to send it as docx (MS Office format)? In that case, be careful. You can use the attachment to work from. Take a good look at the tabs on the Page style options window.
Now is the time.odt
Sample file with header and footer enabled from page 2, none on page 1.
