[Solved] Spell-check runs, but ends with no results

Post by BasePlayer »

I don't usually use spell check, and find auto-correct, and auto-complete, a pain. So I may have turned something off that I now can't find to turn back on.
But now I want to spell-check a document for publishing, and, though I can run it from "tools", it simply reports "Spell-check complete", even if I introduce some deliberate errors in the text.
Any clues?

Make certain your text is entered in the language for which you have selected a dictionary. Language for text at the current cursor position is shown in the middle of the Status Bar (bottom bar of OO window - /View /Status bar to turn on/off). If "none" is shown, use /Tools /Language : For all text to set the text to the desired language.

Thank you - I don't think that's it. My text language is set to English and my dictionary is "Standard".

It almost certainly is the problem. The precise variant of English used in text must match that of the selected dictionary,.

On a sample document on my computer, English(UK) is shown on Status Bar; when I select /Tools /Language : For all text, English(UK) is shown as the first line of the next window.

Well, I am using a version of OpenOffice that I downloaded here in Spain - so your theory may be correct. However, in the status bar, it says Ingles(EE.UU.), and under Tools, language, I notice that Ingles(EE.UU) is ticked for "Selection", but nothing is ticked for "Paragraph" or "All Text". If I select Ingles for each of these, it makes no difference - no ticks appear. Under "writing assistance" that there are 3 "modules of available languages", and tried changing these, but they only offer varieties of Spanish, so I unticked them all. However, the next box (Dictionaries defined by the user) allowed me to change the "Standard" from "Todos" (all) to Ingles(EE.UU.) , I unticked "business" and "soffice" and changed "IgnoreAllList" to Ingles(EE.UU.).
However, none of this made any difference. The only message I get is "Spellcheck complete"

See if that helps: [Troubleshooting] Spell check in OpenOffice.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the *EDIT button if your issue has been fixed.

Thanks for sending this test. I note that it says "none" on the status bar.
The result of the spellcheck is as before. "Spellcheck Complete". Didn't pick up your deliberate error.

Open John_Ha's file, use /Tools /Language /For All text and select English(UK); now run spellcheck again.

Your Spanish version of AOO probably does not install the English SpellCheck dictionaries needed to check English spelling. Go to Tools > Extension Manager. If there is no "English spelling, hyphenation dictionaries..." extension, then download and install the English dictionaries extension from:
