[Solved] Distance between text and underline

Has anyone discovered an easy way to increase the distance between text and its underline to avoid the underline hitting the descenders of certain fonts?

There isn't one.

You could try not underlining letters with descenders. It could be done by Find and Replace where you find every lower case " g ", etc, and set them all to "not underlined".

I haven't looked into the matter, but I think the underline is as defined in the font. You could try editing the font underline character by increasing its spacing, using a font editor, and see if that changes things

It no doubt does - the line then probably clashes with the ascenders from the line below.

If the text was fully justified each line could be written as a separate paragraph and a paragraph border below with the required spacing could be added. You then need to cover the border extending beyond the last line.

Or draw a drawing line under the text.

You could try overlining on the line below.

Good thinking. It works pretty well as long as you don't do any edits after, as long as you don't use Gap after paragraph as the first line of a new paragraph is then very low. It misses both ascenders and descenders.

It can be impossible to line up if the lower character is a wide character like w.

Another fiddly offbeat one is to have a separate paragraph below made as short in height as possible with line characters or something else for the line.
In the picture the line is overlined spaces in a paragraph below the text set as fixed line spacing of 0.1cm, text to text alignment of Top, character overlining as single and font size 6.

From my understanding (possibly faulty) of the positioning of the underline character, editing this in the font might require all characters of that font to be positioned on a taller block of space, so that moving the underline down might have the effect of increasing the font "leading".
