When dealing with Math I find it much easier to use Writer and inserting Formula objects.
This can be done using; Insert -> Object -> Formula.
To make it easier I have the button added to my Insert toolbar, which can be achieved by; Tools -> Customize... -> Toolbars - Toolbar "Insert" - Select checkbox of Formula (looks like sqrt a).
