Headings: continuous numbering, font size & spacing differ

Postby drowouw » Tue Sep 10, 2019 4:40 pm

OpenOffice 4.1.1

Trying to achieve a chapter heading numbering format like shown in the attached image.
What especially is currently not possible for me to achieve is (as stated in the title) the differing font size in a continuous numbering as well as, concerning spacing, adding a tab stop after the numbering for the first level and a space for all deeper levels.

In case there is any description available, I will gladly appreciate pointing me towards it, as I could not find an indepth explanation on how to achieve the desired result.

See attached file, you can modify the formatting easily at two locations.

1. Tools - Outline numbering. If you want the formatting of the number to be different than for the rest of the heading, you have to use a character style for the number. First make a new character style and change the font face and size and anything else to what you want, then select that character style in the Outline Numbering dialog box.
2. In the Paragraph Style and Character Style dialog boxes.

It's a good idea to make a copy of your document, then play with all of the settings in the Outline Numbering and PAragraph and Character Style dialog boxes to see what effect they have.

Thank your for the hint concerning the character style within the numbering options.
Yet it is not advisable to change document-wide numbering outline settings, especially when creating large documents with different heading styles.
The better way to do this is by modifying the relevant numbering styles (tab position/ options) for the headings accordingly.

The purpose of the document-wide numbering outline settings is to achieve consistency of formatting of chapter titles. You can't do that without changing the document-wide settings.

It's not "better". It's just a different path to modifying the document-wide Outline Numbering settings. Modify the Position and Options settings in any one heading, then open Tools > Outline Numbering. You should see that the settings in Outline Numbering have been modified.
