[Solved] Unable to Delete Picture

Post by bobgarrett »

I have an ODT file which has an image in it which I cannot seem to delete.
The image was left there after I copied the text around it from one place in the document to another. The image is now overlapping off the bottom of the page.
I can select it and even move it but if I select "cut" of hit delete then nothing happens.
I have tried resaving the document in Word format and editing this with OpenOffice but it has the same behaviour.
I have tried editing the Word file in MS-Word and it does the same.
Clearly the file is corrupted in some way.
Any suggestions?

Is it in a protected section? Search Help with Section.

Open Navigator with F11
Highlight the graphic in Navigator
right-click > Graphics > Delete
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Might the picture be inserted as a page background, but badly positioned?

Upload a file (eg .odt) showing the problem so that it can be analysed. Use the Upload attachment tab below where you type - 128 kB max here or use a file share site.
Open Navigator with F11
Highlight the graphic in Navigator
right-click > Graphics > Delete
What happened when you did that?
LO 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 Home 64 bit

Something else to add re this problem.

Editing this part of the document is extremely slow. As soon as the page with image on it appears on screen then updating of the screen takes many minutes.
The odt file is a little under 3MB in size but I cannot upload it for examination as it is as it contains some confidential information

I named the image so I could work out which one it was in the list, selected it in Navigator, right clicked and choose delete. Nothing happened, the image is still there.

1 Delete virtually all the text and upload the file.

2 You can obscure the contents without affecting the structure too much (lines will spill differently because different characters have different widths) by changing every alphabetic character to an " x ", and every digit to an " n " with

Edit > Find and Replace
Tick Regular expressions (under More ...)
Find box [:alpha:]
Replace box x
click Replace all
and
Find box [:digit:]
Replace box n
click Replace all

I have reduced the file down to the area with the problem - there are a number of images overlapping now but all could be deleted if I could!
Any suggestions of how to solve this in the full document would be great.
Note that this takes ages to open and may say it needs recovering.

Upload a file - all else is guesswork.

I have sent you a message with my ID - send me the file.

I thought I had uploaded the file edited down to just the problem section but it was still too big.

There is something horribly corrupted about the file you uploaded. \Pictures in the .odt has just four images in it but when I open Navigator there are hundreds if not thousands of references to images. AOO stopped responding when I scroll.

You will hopefully now appreciate why I twice asked you to check Navigator - the problem is immediately obvious.

What is the file's history? It has been badly mangled at some time.

Has it been exchanged with someone else, and edited using LibreOffice and / or MS Word; and Edit > Changes ..., used? And/or saved as a .docx file? The corruption (hundreds of repeats of frames and images, where the name increments by 1 each time) in content.xml is symptomatic of corruption introduced by LO? MS Word? editing.

See another almost identical example at Re: [Solved] Automatically created duplicate images where it appears MS Word saving as a .odt file causes this corruption.

Code: Select all

The file has only been edited with OpenOffice.
It was fine until about a week ago when I transferred a section which included this image from its previous position to the end of the document. I then did a few more edits and inserts until it got to this state which it has been in since then.
I did also save it as a Word file in case OpenOffice might work with that format or indeed that Word might handle it, but the odt file is as it became using OpenOffice.
Oh, and I did have Edit Changes turned on but turned it off and accepted all when the problem started in case this was the problem.

I think it was saving it as a .odt file in MS Word which caused the corruption.

I have deleted the multiple occurrences in the attached .odt file, and I then deleted the images leaving the file small enough to be uploaded here.

See [Tutorial] Differences between Writer and MS Word files for why you should always work in and save files as .odt.

If this solves the problem, please view your first post in this thread and click the Edit button (top right in the post) and add [Solved] in front of the subject.

Thank you for doing this and for the advice. The file was only a small part of the document and I have now taken your suggestion to convert the file to XML edit the duplicates etc. and now have a text file in the right format to which I will paste the graphics afresh.

Thanks again.
