[Solved] Page Numbering is going to KILL ME!!!

Post by pjstock »

OK, here I am AGAIN.
and I swear, I spent HOURS this morning reading up on page numbering and page styles etc etc.
and of course I am just about to send this document off to my printer when Whammmy! the page numbering goes haywire.

This is for a booklet.
So, I setup a Page Style "Inside Cover" which does not have a footer (and so no PNs)
then I followed that with a TOC page style (where I want to start with PN = 1)
and that was followed by a Booklet Body page style (where I would like it to just carry on 2,3,4,5,6....)

and I am getting 1,2,3,4,5, 0,1,2,3.....

What's going on here? Please!

Before you are going to die, I suggest that you enter the numbers manually. Not too much effort for the life of you.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

Place cursor in first line on ToC page and /Format /Paragraph. On the Text Flow tab the selected page number under the "Breaks" section should be 1, as you wish the count to start at 1. On the Booklet pages you may have set page numbering by using an offset when you /Insert /File /Page Number ; if so, you should delete this offset for the numbering to carry on.

But if you are in a hurry, do as Villeroy says and enter the page numbers by hand. These numbers must be outside any Header or Footer, or they will repeat - that is the property of Header and Footers that he text in then repeats, unless it is inserted by specific fields, in particular the Page Number field.

ahh, thank you.
Funny (well maybe not so funny) but after I posted this plea I Googled around for "Open Office Page Numbers are jumping" and lo and behold if I don't come across a post, on basically the same problem, from almost exactly one year ago from.... Yours Truly. Me. I'd had the same issue 12 months ago. (my problem I guess is that I don't do this stuff often enough for the lessons to really sink in.)

In that one the problem seemed to be rogue Page Breaks and it reminded me how to see them (Options > Appearances) and I see that this doc is also littered with PBs. I expect that cleaning them up will also clear up this problem.

Thanks again for your time and patience.

In general one only needs page breaks when a page style changes except for the situation where one inserts a break to establish an illustration on its own page. So I would only expect page breaks between the cover page and the ToC pages and between the ToC pages and the booklet text pages. My description above should be sufficient to get the numbering starting on the ToC, from 1. There should be no Page Number field on the cover page(s). Remember that you can easily find out if numbers originate from a field by two clever switches. These are /View /Field names which will switch the fields between their result and their field, and /View /Field shadings, which will put fields (or field names, depending on the previous setting, on a shaded background. This does not print, but the /View /Field names will print the names if that is turned on. Many writers will leave Field shadings on for ease of formatting, and will toggle the Field names for fault finding.

I suspect that you have set a Page Numbering offset at the page break between the ToC and the booklet text.

thank you .
I will review, adopt and try to absorb and remember for the future.

I use manual page breaks when my material demands it. for example, to start a new section (my term) on a new clean page.
or when a section comes close to the bottom of a page and it would look messy or be distracting to leave just one paragraph of a new section / chapter dangling at the bottom of a page.

But maybe that is bad design.
