[Solved] OpenOffice 4 Mac and EndNote X7 citations

Post by tarepanya »

I'm a grad student currently writing my MA thesis with Endnote X7 and MS Word Mac 2011. Endnote's "Cite While You Write" tool is proving indispensable and my advisor uses Word to critique my drafts. Unfortunately, Word enjoys crashing at least once a day.

I am on the fence about switching the project over to OpenOffice, thesis advisor be darned. In the Endnote knowledge base (http://community.thomsonreuters.com) it looks like earlier versions of EndNote and an OpenOffice plugin may have worked together on a mac, but that information is years old now. CWYR is so helpful that I need a word processor that can access it.

Do you know if Endnote X7 and OpenOffice can be used together on a Mac?

Related question:
Has anyone use the TextCite plugin on a Mac to get Endnote and OpenOffice to cite as you work?

Ask on Endnote site. They have previously been actively helpful.

I sent Thomson Reuters a similar email this afternoon, and will post anything helpful here.

A good alternative is AOO and Zotero. Zotero seems to work seamlessly with AOO Writer. Endnote seems able to export all referenes to a Zotero compatible format.

Unfortunately, Thomson Reuters wrote back that EndNote is "not designed to be compatible with Open Office."

I looked into the Zotero help forums and it does not seem to reliably import .ris files, which is how I export citations from WorldCat. Perhaps for the next project I can start from Zotero, but exporting-importing my bibliography mid-thesis on top of switching to Open Office sounds iffy.

Thank you for your help, though. I'll write back to EndNote pointing out that this will be my last purchase of their product if they stick with only supporting Word.

Yes changing in midstream might be a problem :) I have never used WorldCat though I did see a reference https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/27336/ that seems to suggests the situation is improving but it still looks risky.

Otherwise Zotero seems to work pretty well with AOO and generally exports fairly well to bibtex if you use LaTeX.

For these crashes, I have found that often have to clear the .plist files out of the /Library/Preferences folder (click on "Go," hold "Option" to reveal the "Library" folder). This worked on one system I use at work. However, the other one had to have the entire Microsoft Office suite removed, including the file not removed by the "unistaller" and reinstalled.

It's not a fix, but it seems a decent enough bandaid for being in the middle of your work. Best of luck with Word and the MA thesis.
Best regards,
Nick

That particular crash turned out to be a problem of .doc files vs. .docx files with the Endnote plugin X7 for Word. Once all the files were converted to .docx, the crash-every-time-I-saved bug vanished. But thanks for helping troubleshoot!
