Whats a relationship for?

I think i understood something that i read that said some data base languages don't use relations like MySQL. I have been getting my feet wet in Base and have made tables that then interact in form with list boxes and such. I have not needed to draw any relations between the tables to do anything so far. What are relations for or are they really needed? I really want to get the full grasp of how data bases work and how to use them well. Any understanding on this would be wonderful.
