Do not use Dark theme, if you can not recognise the boundary of the Page and the Margin-lines (etc...) on a monocolor view.

The default theme of the Apache OpenOffice on my Windows 10:
Default theme.png
There is a visible contrast betveen the page of the new document, and the background of the application.
Your attachment shows a full black environment.

You will not loose your documents. But YOU MUST know, where you saved them to on your HDD/SSD.

It's an operating system setting. I suggest you search Google for details.

thank you sir , actually i did remember the " black" background after i replied to you in my last message , i can easily alter the background colour.

i will make sure i know where my saved documents are and uninstall then re-install open office .
i was thinking my problem was to do with tables etc , i do not fully understand things like tables etc , i have no use for them so i do not need to know i suppose. i get 4 of those " boxes " shown in the attachment.

i am not a big user of O/O but when i need something like that it is the program i use .

thank you for your assistance , regards don rees
