Greetings,
I have tried all the solutions offered since I first posted this
I have tried many things but the French dictionary still refuses to work.
I had to switch PC's and installed V. 4.1.10 - French dictionary didn't work after the switch.
I have uninstalled my 4.0 version and installed 4.1.10 (Updates doesn't work either)
I installed the French dictionary in the new version.
Extension manager shows it is there yet it still doesn't work!
In addition, I can't remove it from the Ext, Mgr. The 'REMOVE' option is grayed out.
I have installed the latest version of Java.
I have done just about everything yet it still doesn't workl!
Not being able to use this dictionary is a real hassle.
Please help.

Re: [Solved] The dictionaries don't work
There are some aspects of OpenOffice that require Java to be installed.
I don't know if the problem you are having is affected by the lack of a Java installation or not, but it won't hurt to install the 32 bit version of Java.
Please note that the 32 bit version is the version OpenOffice needs. OpenOffice won't work with the 64 bit versions.

Re: The French dictionary doesn't work
It certainly works for me, if the text is marked as French (France).
One needs to set Language to French(France) for the selected text to be spellchecked, or define a Paragraph or Character Style with that as the language; note that the (France) can be replaced with your regional variation, but both the language specified in the Style or selection and that of the selected dictionary must match.
