Every word marked as wrong - Resolved

Post by sandymarberry »

I've been using this program for word processing for years and prefer it to MS Word and everything else! But recently my spell check has been marking every word as wrong. How do I fix this??

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I've split your post from the old topic dating 2008. Please have a look at the Survival Guide for the forum.
Your issue has been discussed extensively and there are several tutorials for that, see: [Solved] Spell Check Not Working (words red underlined).

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the *EDIT button if your issue has been fixed.

There are a number of ways to cure a faulty spellcheck. My normal advice is this:

Rename your OO user profile.

As your Forum .sig says you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures almost all spellcheck problems.

You have possibly lost your spellchecker (and may do again) because of an OpenOffice or system crash, or because of over-hasty close down of the computer before all internal housekeeping was written to disk

To avoid this, always use the formal Shutdown procedure for your computer, then wait a few seconds for all disk activity to cease after the "OK to shutdown message" or the dark screen before disconnecting from the power or closing the laptop lid.
Edit: Note that if you use the above method you will need to reinstall any OO extensions you have previously installed.
