Text documents open as read only

Recently some text documents and some spread sheets open as read only, although the problem is inconsistent. I have been an Open Office user for years and have never had this problem. To my knowledge I have not changed my settings, although anything's possible. I have tried uninstalling Open Office and reinstalling the latest version, the problem persists. Help?

Have you moved these from an earlier machine? Were they written by another user, or by you logged on as another user, say after someone else had started computer, then you continued using it?

Look in the directory where the files are saved for any .~.lock.filename.odt or .ods matching your files and delete them
