"Save" Function greyed

While working on a spreadsheet and using the "save" function a number of times (maybe 20), the icon for "save" suddenly greyed out. All I could do then was to do a :save as..". Any reason why the "save" function would no longer be available? Please advise!

The Save icon will be enabled when the document has been changed. There is nothing (any new information) to save until the changing.
Or it not work for you?
