Hi there- new to this forum but not new to OO have been using for some time- mainly spreadsheets and other stuff. Lately every time I try to insert a line on a spreadsheet it spins and becomes unresponsive. Once i left and went and made a cuppa - came back it was sorted but otherwise i have to force close and then recover to get doc's back. A bit annoying as my spread sheet has a running total some lines down but when i reach that point I have to insert more lines and then bam crash- any advice? I would like to solve this issue.

Try: Restart computer, then start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any soffice or openoffice processes shown on TM's tabs.

Thanks ... I do kill it via task manager but, I don't want to have to do this every time I want to insert a line, that the question I'm looking to answer.

Crashing may sometimes be caused by a left-over OO component, hence the use of TM. Having done that, you should also Rename your OO user profile, so that a new one is generated on next start of OO. This cures a lot of unexplained OO problems.

Cheers ...where's my user profile? And I take it my documents remain the same? sorry if these are dumb questions.

Your documents will remain on the computer in the location in which they were saved, but until reopened and saved will not show up on the Recent Documents list.

Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder (user.old is good to use). Start OpenOffice.

ff you select Help and in that menu "Restart in Safe Mode" at least for LibreOffice this will give several options, one of which is to create a New profile.

For information there is no "Safe Mode" in OO.

Oh. There should be. Really useful for getting *Office working again.
