Spreadsheet will not save

Post by mjsigg521 »

I recently installed OpenOffice. When I try to save a spreadsheet I get a message "Error Saving Document. Write Error. File could not be written".
I tried several times and using different spreadsheets. I did find it will save if I tell it to save as XLS

The OpenOffice and the LibreOffice _can_ save into the foreign (Microsoft related) binary, never standardized old fashioned .xls format, but there is not 100% compatibility between the different fileformat. You will lost some formatting information when use the foreign fileformats.
Always store your documents in the native, International Standard ODF (.ods in this case) file format.
I get a message "Error Saving Document. Write Error. File could not be written".
Save (try to save) your document into .ods fileformat, and please upload the example file here. Maybe you embedded some incompatible content.

Or try to reset the User profile of the OpenOffice on your PC.

Or you can try the LibreOffice. It has a littlebit higher compatibility with the MS fileformats.

See if that query helps.
It's a rather difficult case where no real fix has been found so far.
It seems that you've enough rights on the folder you are trying to save into since it works with .xls, that's rather interesting.

It will only save to .XLS. Every time I try to save a file as .ODS, I get the error message and the file is not saved

Is there a hidden lock file in the save directory?

how would I look for that?

Another thing it, will start saving, green bar runs across, and will immediately try again and will not stop trying. I have to hit exit between save attempts.

You've to display the hidden files and folders (properties of your file browser). Then when you open a file, you should see a file starting with .~lock.file_name.xls#.

Does your file have a three letter extension? If so, what is it?
