Recover deleted document

Post by jayberg »

I just deleted by mistake an .odt document I was working on for an hour. I have the save function every 15 minutes turned on. I didn't have the create backup copy option turned on, however. I ran recuva and searched the hidden files but still couldn't locate the correct copy. I would think that since the save function every 15 minutes was turned it that a copy exists in the computer with my additions. HELP!! (if possible)

Did you look in the Temp files directory, as listed in your Open Office paths?
If you did, and you didn't find anything there, then I think you are out of luck for the changes between the most recent version that Recuva found and the version that you are wanting.

Just thought of this: Did you check the Windows Recycle Bin?

Yes-I looked in the Temp files. I didn't see the changes that were over 15 minutes out. Nothing in the Recycle. Thanks Russell.

Did you ever save the file? If not, then I'm afraid that there's very little chance of recovering anything. The "save function" does not save your file. It saves "AutoRecovery information" so that the file can be recovered if Writer crashes. When you close the file normally, the AutoRecovery Information is deleted. Also, "backup" files are the penultimate version of the file that you save. If you never saved the file, there will be no backup.

I thought that "save AutoRecovery" (set for every 15 minutes) would have saved the data automatically. From what you stated, since the file was closed I suppose that data was deleted/lost.

The data is saved automatically, but it's not a permanent copy of the data. The data is only for crash recovery and is deleted if the file is closed normally. The user still has to save a permanent copy before closing the file.
