[Solved] Printing both sides of paper

Post by steamman »

Hi I have some letters which I want to put on to two sides of an A4 sheet. Some letters are many pages, I should like to know if I can print say pages 1,3,5,7,9, and the other sides 2,4,6,8 and so on. What I am trying to say is, Page 1 on one side page 2 on reverse.
I have an Epson 212 XP and I contacted them to ask, The reply came that it is the Application which can determine the dual page print not the software nor the printer.
Is there a menu in Open Office which can provide this function

A quick answer offering a workaround. If you place numbers 1,3,5 etc in the Selection box you will print only those pages and then etc 6,4,2 for the inverted paper stack. Easiest perhaps to /File /Export as PDF, then print from Adobe Reader which will allow printing odd or even pages and also reverse order.

There may be a setting to do this in OpenOffice, but I suspect it will be printer dependant; I haven't time to investigate at present.
Edit: I've just had a very quick look and can see no "print odd"/"Print even" page settings in OpenOffice for my two printers (Samsung scx4570 and Epson WP4535).
I think the PDF route using Adobe Reader may be the easiest and quickest solution.

Now that they are of reasonable cost, I would never recommend purchase of a new printer that did not do automatic double-sided printing. An existing printer needs the above workaround.

I spent days wondering why when I printed a two page document the EPSON WorkForce WF-7610 would Duplex (print the two pages front and back of a single sheet.

Today, from within Open Office instead of selecting the Print Direct button I went to the top line File, Print and found a box Two-Sided When the box is unticked then the printer does not Duplex.

Just what I wanted!!

From the offline help - F1

Print File Directly
Click the Print File Directly icon to print the active document with the current default print settings. These can be found in the Printer Setup dialog, which you can call with the Printer Settings menu command.

Dear OO Help,

iMac/OS 10.13.3/Epson WF 7710 :

From FireFox, Command + P yields a full menu of paper style and handling adjustments.

From Open Office, Command + P yields a very sparse list of adjustments.

I particularly miss a choice of preset page styles. Most printing is double-sided but I would like to conveniently print single-sided.

Do you foresee a solution at you end ?

Is this an Epson issue, an Open Office issue, or both ?

Thanks !

I use (inter alia) an Epson wp-4535 printer and a Lexmark mx510de printer, both of which offer automatic duplex printing; on /File /Print is a Properties button which permits selection of the printer utilities, including paper size, single/duplex printing, side of flip for duplex, colour or BW (where applicable); the precise form of what is offered and how selected depends on the installed printer driver - i.e., in my case these screens differ from Epson to Lexmark.

In a recent instance of printing a 750 page book in brochure format in binding signatures of 24 pages on the Lexmark, the OO file remembered the printer settings on subsequent openings to reprint some misfeeds.

I have tried everything and can not find any way to access double sided printing, going from OpenOffice 4.1.5 to my Brother laser printer.
Previously, with an older version of OpenOffice, this was not an issue.
Please advise!
It seems ironic to have so many difficulties in this area and not a single entry in the help section.
Also the disappearing access to this feature is another concern.
Hoping for an answer.
Any answer!

In /File /Print have you pressed the Properties button and set the printer to be doublesided - possibly by selecting "Duplex" on the Paper tab that Properties may reveal? The precise setting differs from printer brand to printer brand.

My OO's can certainly print double sided on both a duplex Epson and a duplex Lexmark

@ Frances

Just followed Rory's instructions on my inexpensive Brother HL-3170CDW printer. Duplex printing working well.

I have tried everything and cannot find the option anywhere.

On an old version of Windows, I find the Properties button just under the printer selection box on /File /Print /General tab.

I have to say that I find this to be another odd aspect of our modern life.
We have an application with which I used to be able to print both sides of the page by ticking a box, and now, people are busy with work arounds.
I think it would be great to get an older version of the application if that is possible.
Or, for us to all give our heads a shake and ask why? why? why? until everyone is listening.

Cheers,

You can download older versions of OO from http://www.openoffice.org/download/ by selecting the desired version from the dropdowns on that site.
