Installing Templates for OpenOffice 4.1.2

Post by adam.d.b »

I am brand new to OpenOffice, and have no idea how to install templates.
I have downloaded 3 different templates as .zip and cannot figure out how to import the files into OpenOffice 4.1.2.

The instructions that I've read have told me to use the Organize > My Templates > Commands >Import Template, but there is no (OTT) file in the unzipped folders. Everything is .xml.

I think what happened is that your browser changed the file extension from .ott to .zip. OpenOffice files are actually .zip files, so nothing about the files has been changed other than the name. Rename them to have the .ott extension and you should be able to follow the instructions.

I followed the directions and changed the extension to ott. Then I placed that file into the templates folder in Open Office. I started Open office, and clicked on templates but I don't see it there. Where should I put the file and how do I get it to show up when I click on templates?

Try opening the file in OpenOffice and then using the menu File -> Templates -> Save

Template files should be placed in the Templates folder in the user profile. The path to the Templates folder is shown in Tools > Options > OpenOffice > Paths. Template files placed in the template folder in the OpenOffice program files won't show up in OpenOffice.

Templates are application data which can be modified by the user. Users aren't supposed to modify anything in program files. Windows provides the AppData area for programs to store application data.
