[Solved] Start menu icons missing after upgrade

Post by shure »

I upgraded to OpenOffice 4.1.2 from 4.1.1 and everything appears to work alright but the icons in my start menu are missing. It shows the generic windows missing icon icon. I tried right click -> properties -> shortcut -> change icon and it shows the correct icon. But if I click ok and it doesn't change. I've restarted and nada.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I noticed the same problem, but found that it seemed to rectify itself after starting the specific application.. ie: the icon for Calc corrected itself after starting Calc, likewise with Writer.
These are the two I use the most, so they were the first that I noticed.
So, give that a try.... a bit of a nuisance, but seemingly easily resolved.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did try and open each program but it didn't seem to work. Not sure if this matters but I upgraded without first uninstalling 4.1.1.

Also I should clarify that it is only Base, Calc, Draw & Math.

I just upgraded from AOO 4.1.1 to AOO 4.1.2 on Windows 10 and had no missing icons. If they don't reappear soon, you might verify the integrity of the downloaded file and try a Repair of the installation.

It may also be good to restart Windows after upgrading OO and give it time to rebuild the icon cache. A lot of work can go on in the background after such an upgrade.

I just tried rebuilding the icon cache by deleting C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\IconCache.db and resetting the computer.
All of the icons rebuilt on the desktop & in the start menu but still have the missing Base, Calc, Draw & Math. Also interesting is that when I have one of these programs open it shows the broken icon on the taskbar but the correct icon when I hover over it.

I can't help further as I don't regularly use Windows. I note that the DEB 64 release has the correct icons for all applications.

I appreciate all the suggestions :)

Ok, I downloaded again & verified the file.
Uninstalled OpenOffice 4.1.2 with the broken icons.
Deleted C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4 folder
Deleted C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user
Deleted IconCache.db
Cleared Temp folder
Restarted computer
Installed OpenOffice 4.1.2 with the new verified file
Restarted computer

Same result - missing Base, Calc, Draw & Math icons.
Since no one else has this issue I suppose this is an odd windows hangup. Does Windows cache the icons somewhere else?

I suggest you change your Windows theme, which might use different icons, reboot, see if the icons are OK, then change theme back.

Tried changing the Windows theme & restarting and no improvement.
Also I tried logging off and login in under a different account and it is still the same.

This really has me puzzled.

Grasping at straws: perhaps something to do with your monitor resolution.

I uninstalled 4.1.2 and installed 4.1.1 and all the icons are working.
Then re-installed 4.1.2 and they were broken again... so this is somehow unique to 4.1.2 for me.

Interestingly I tried to upgrade on a separate computer (Win7 upgrading from 4.1.1) and I got a similar result - except it was only Calc, Impress, Math missing.
During the install I click Custom Install and remove all Optional Components except Dictionary & Graphic Filter.

Well I never figured out what was causing this but if anyone else has this issue, I was able to fix it by deleting the shortcuts with the broken icons and creating new ones.
