[Solved] "...file is locked for editing by (myself!)"

Post by SR48 »

I am using a standard PC clone, Windows 7, and Apache OO v 4.0.1. After restoring OO files after backup, I try to open one and get this troublesome problem that requires me to open a copy of the file for editing.

I tried a multi-step fix for MACs that I saw on this forum, but, it did not work. Is there a way to make Windows7 an OO stop thinking I have all OO files open already when I open them??

Enable "viewing of hidden files" at system level and delete any files with names similar to this

Code: Select all

.~lock.MyFile.odt#
Note that such files are typically a few hundred bytes in size; whereas the "owning" file with the core name is typically at least six or more KB in size. Do _not_ delete the larger files. If in doubt seek informed assistance.

SOLVED

Yeah. Found it. If after restore of files, they are “locked,” just go to Start >Ctrl Pnl >enter into search field upper right in window: "Folder Options" >select "View" tab >see list ... open folder “Hidden files and folders” >select radio button “Show hidden files, folders, and drives" >click Apply > click OK > now, delete all the “locked files in your OO file folders.

Thanks for your reply RoryO.l

Such "lock" files can be left over after a program or computer crash, and the fix is as above. If a directory is backed up while OpenOffice is in use, then the "lock" files can also be transferred, as you have found. It is better practice to backup while nothing is running, if that is possible.
