If your brochure file opens in gibberish, it is in a format probably not intended to be edited. Word won't help you in that case.

Tell us the file extension (three letters after .) and we'll tell you what might open it.

I'm having trouble opening a number of save documents. I get a box that has a heading "A-SCII FILTER OPTIONS" in the box is a choice of language, etc. When I click OK the document opens with jibberish. Suggestions???

Look for backups of your files. You may have automatic backup enabled in which case look for the backups folder shown in Tools > Options > OO > Paths. You are not alone.

It is very important that you backup your files (and don't rely on 'automatic' backups).

I have same problem. When I attempt to open a file I get the ASCII FILTER OPTIONS window. The Character Set option is currently set at Western Europe (Apple Mackintosh), the font option is set at Times New Roman, the language is set at English (USA) AND PARAGRAPH BREAKS SET AT CR.
When I   try to open the file (choose "OPEN") I get jibberish.
I have tried various Character Set Options, all produce jibberish.
i use OO version 4.1.0 on a Macbook Pro operating system OS High Sierra 10.13.1

In this condition OO is all but useless to me. any help would be appreciated.

Your only hope is to see [Tutorial] How to find and un-delete Writer temporary files for

a) detailed instructions on how to recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was when it was last saved with AutoRecovery.

b) how to find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which have since been deleted.

c) how to un-delete the temporary files Writer wrote while you were editing the file, and then deleted. This will recover your file as it was when you last opened or you last saved it and is probably your best hope.

See the Writer Guide, the Writer FAQ, the Writer Tutorials and Writer for students.

Remember: Always save your Writer files as .odt files. - see here for the many reasons why.
