Welcome beginner. Please answer all of the questions below which may provide information necessary to answer your question.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which version of OpenOffice.org are you using? 2.3
What Operating System (version) are you using? XP
What is your question or comment?
When I save a document as a Open Office document on the desktop and close out of Open Office. I then double click on the file icon on the desktop and the file is now changed to "file" type under type of file under properties. I then have to tell it what program to use to open the file. Basically it is telling me in the Open Office that it is saving the file as an Open Office extension, but when I try opening the same file again it has changed it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: file identification issue
When doing the initial Save (or Save as), check that the "Automatic file name extension" box at the bottom of the Save dialogue has not got turned OFF.
