ASCII Filter Option prevents opening files

Post by opticomm »

I recently moved to a Mac where I use OO.o (v. 3.1.1 / Build 9420) under the Windows side under Bootcamp - using VISTA Home Premium
SP 2. I also use OO.o on the Mac side of course (OS10.6.2) and experience the same problem there as well, on Writer and Calc files. This problem does not happen all the time but, unfortunately with increasing frequency. Problem: When I go to open a file, I often get an ASCII Filter Options dialog box and, no matter which option I select, will then get pages full of ###########. In most cases to date, especially when in Mac, I can go back to my Time Machine backup and retrieve a good file. But today, on the Windows side I have not been so successful trying to open a rather complex tax file (odt) which I had not opened for about a year. Key questions: 1) How can I retrieve this particular file, and 2) more importantly, how can I remedy this situation once and for all and prevent it from happening again.

I did use your search tool and found many issues under ASCII Filter Option, but none that solved my problem. I suspect it may be in User Profile, but have gone to that tutorial and still don't understand what I must do to correct that problem.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

See that thread: 22 pages term paper replaced with pound signs.

Perhaps you can try to reset your OOo user profile. But during the welcome process, don't transfer your personal data (if you had 2.x), former configuration files might corrupt the new profile.

I don't have access to rename the user file. Don't know why because I am shown as the administrator and it is password protected. But it never asked for my password. When I upgraded to 3.1.1 I had already upgraded from 2x to 3.0, so I supposed I corrupted the User Profile at that time, right? So resetting the user file now may not solve the problem, right? Would I be better off uninstalling OO.o and reinstalling it?

Uninstalling and re-installing doesn't affect the user profile (precisely so that you can upgrade and uninstall/re-install and not lose your profile). You need to be able to delete or rename it 'by hand'.

It's rather difficult to say for sure if it will cure it but it's worth trying. Note that I haven't see any reports yet with 3.2. Perhaps upgrading would also help. But the profile has been slightly changed in 3.2 so better reset it.
