ODT documents don't open in Microsoft Word 2003

I'm trying to transfer an odt file from my laptop to my desktop but when I try to open the file in microsoft word 2003(xp professional) it brings up some kind of encoding window and then shows up as weird characters.

If you want to open a OO document in MS Office, you need to save it as a MS Word Document. In the "save as" window select the "filter" drop down and choose "Microsoft Word Document".

Another possibility install
ODF plugin into MSO 2003.
MSO 2003 not support odf file format.
