Hi,

first choose an extended mirror (Directories S C L D E) near you from the mirrors list.
The language packs can be found in the folder ./extended/3.0.1rc2/. The Japanese language pack has the code "ja".

Thank you VERY much, Phil.
Only with your help I was able to know the whereabouts of the language packs.
I wonder why this is a sooo well kept of a secret.
I wonder Why are language packs not more easily referred to in the OOo web pages, or in general documentation about OOo (for the sake of non savvy users).
Thanks again.

You're welcome, jerojero!

I completely agree to your view. I prefer the language packs over the localized versions, as they allow to switch between different languages of the user interface.
So I don't know why people are not pointed to them on the website.

I don't know whom we could address to propose this. Can anybody help?

Would it make sense to create a tutorial on language packs so that people find it even more easily than this thread?

I had made that one: Change language for user interface (menus & help files). But not transfered to the Tutorial section because there is also this very thread here put as sticky by Drew. I wouldn't make a 'competition' by setting my own besides his. But we can build a real tutorial by mixing both information.

I fully agree that the localized versions are quite a loss of time and energy. A languagepack is only 15MB, so around 10% to be downloaded in addition to the standard package.

The localized versions can be installed by users who do not read any English at all.
Please, edit this topic's initial post and add "[Solved]" to the subject line if your problem has been solved.

OK, Hagar, I agree that there should be no competition.

For a newbie this very thread might be a bit difficult to understand, and also a newbie would maybe find it more easily when it was a tutorial.
Hagar de l'Est wrote:I had made that one: Change language for user interface (menus & help files).
That would be quite a good start, maybe to be amended regarding the correct extended mirrors and by removing the link to the wiki page - which has unfortunately not been updated since 2.3.1.

Would you like to contact Drew to propose this or should I do so?

Thanks for the comments, I've modified the post. Can you contact Drew? What I propose is to keep mine as the basis of the tutorial because there are interesting tips in the other posts.

Why not having the installer be directly translated in all the languages (like Ubuntu install process)? The extra bytes needed for the different texts would spare the download of fully localized versions.

I am using oo 3.0 on a Japanese Windows OS and the language has defaulted to Japanese on the OO Interface. I am unable to change the setting in Tools, Options, Lauguage. I am also unable to reinstall a copy of the English version, the process stops in the middle and says "already installed" then shuts.

If I uninstall will my calc and writer files also be uninstalled? I plan to uninstall then do a free install.

I could not find the English language pack, seems like all the links I found were dead.

I just looked at a Japanese mirror and the English (US) language pack is available (in /archives/misc/openoffice/stable/3.0.1).

Download the OOo_3.1.0rc2_20090427_Win32Intel_langpack_ja.exe file. The ja string inside the filename is the locale used to recognize the different versions, ja is for Japanese.

Do you really mean 3.2.0?

According to:

http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/new_first_ooo_dev_3
For this version the following files have been uploaded:

* Full install: en-US, ar
* Language Packs: ar, de, fr, ja
* SDK and source tarballs
For these languages, this site at least seems to provide the downloads:

ftp://openoffice.mirrors.tds.net/pub/op ... EV300_m59/
LibreOffice 7.x.x on Arch and Fedora.
