[Solved] Read error (DOC file with tracked changes)

Post by Numpsendorf »

I have been editing a large text file for days. Another editor has opened it using Word,
and sent it back to me with comments on the side. Yesterday it worked fine, now I can't open it?
It says "read error" (in Finnish), with some numbers signifying a specific column?

It also won't open on Office, nor can I convert it onto a different format. A couple of days work appears to have gone
down the drain, unless someone has something helpful for me.

Help would be much appreciated.

The quickest way for this to be fixed is for you to upload the damaged file to a file sharing site, and post the URL here. We can fix it quicker than we can tell how to do that.

This is a known bug in OpenOffice. It happens with Microsoft Word documents where an annotation is attached to a range of text. It does not happen when the annotation is attached to a single position. The file might be repairable. Upload to this forum and we will see what can be done.

Replace OpenOffice with its successor LibreOffice, particularly when you need some level of compatibility with foreign file formats.

Or if the file is less than 128 Kb, upload here. See How to attach a document for details regarding attaching a document.

,,,thanks in advance everyone, a friend is trying something right now, if that doesn't work,
I'll get back here... (I'm sure you all mean well, but forgive me if I'm a bit cautious to send a body of work here openly...)

If your friend fails, we need to see the untampered-with damaged file.

You can fix it yourself - see [Tutorial]Format error discovered in sub-document

If you prefer, send me the file - I have sent you my email ID.

Wow, thank you John, and everyone.
These are detailed instructions, but even so way beyond my skills.

I'll see how my friend is doing, and will get back as soon as I know.

P.S. Already downloaded Libreoffice

It was the usual first style definition which had been corrupted.

It is a known bug in AOO.

LO has fixed the bug so I recommend anyone using tracked changes to switch to LO.
