[Solved] English Spell Check, Dictionary Extensions, Thesaur

Post by samwise777 »

English Spell Check, Dictionary Extensions, Thesaurus - Unable to set up to work on Text Documents
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried to use the 'Spell check', but without ant success.
After installing the version for Windows I found 'Spell check' option did not function.

I then selected the option to 'spellcheck' as I typed.
Then every single word was 'underlined in red', but no alternative spellings were given??
So I turned this option off.

I then downloaded 'dictionary extensions' from the extensions page.
Both these extensions were downloaded and installed.
But when I came to use the spell check, these new dictionaries were not available within the 'Spell Check' section?

So I am totally confused as to how to set Open Office for 'English spell checking' and 'Dictionary Selection' on text documents.

It is the same for the '''Thesaurus''''. The tool is not providing any alternative words? So I also do not know how to set up the Thesaurus for English Word selections.

Am hoping this is just a 'set up' issue and that there is a simple process to set Open Office for '''English Spell check with English Dictionary''' and '''Thesaurus''' selections.

Many thanks for any advice and the ultimate solution to these issues......................Sammy

Rename your OpenOffice user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter.

Open File Explorer.

Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer) Address Bar and press Enter.

Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good choice.

Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

Hello, These were my results:

1. Extension Manager:
- Is showing the 2 dictionaries I downloaded (unfortunately i could not find a plain English Dictionart on the extension site, so downloaded a Canadian and New Zaland dictionnary instead)

2. Lanaguage Settings:
- This was set to English for all text

3. Check the paragraph style settings
- This was set to English

4. Check if the Spell checking is activated
- If this is activated, all it does is underlined every word in the text
- Then if I go to spell check, it highlights one word, but does not provide any suggestions
(so the tool is not operating at present??)

5. Check there is no direct formatting on the text
- This is set to English

6. Let's test your configuration
- I downloaded the file
- There were no words underlined in red for correction ??!!
- So the spell check and dictionary tools are not working on the Open Office I have downloaded at present, and still trying to find a way of correcting these issues.

7. Completely restart OpenOffice
- This did not solve the issues unfortunately

8. LAST CHANCE
Spell checker "red wriggly lines" -

- I followed the path below, but when I got to 'SCRIPTS' there was no 'PYTHON' folder, so I could not continue with this work around !!!

beta test fix for AOOGo back to C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\Scripts\python > right-click inside the folder > Paste. This pastes the file config_backend_cleaner.py into the folder ...\python.

Any further advice or work arounds would be great fully received.................Sammy

Hello,

Unfortunately, within Quickstart file search, when I copy and paste:
%appdata%\OpenOffice\4
This only brings up the following message:

NO ITEMS MATCH YOUR SEARCH

Any further advice to solve these issues would be gratefully received.............Sammy

You have to enter the %aAppdata% into the FileExplorer, not the Internet Explorer.

RoryOF's advice was "Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer)

Hello,

Fantastic!!
After finding the pathway, I renamed the master file as you requested.
I then re-booted my laptop.

I now have full English spell-chck in operation, as well as suggestions in Thesaurus in English.

Thank you very much for pointing out this 'work-a-round' solutions using Open Office............Sammy
