[Solved] OpenOffice 4.1.10 Icon on Taskbar in Windows 10

Post by QQQQQ3951 »

I tried to put the shortcut of the .exe file from the desktop onto my Taskbar. It did go on there and worked ok BUT the icon is not the usual OpenOffice 4.1.10 icon it is just a blank rectangle.

How do I restore my icon ON THE TASKBAR to the usual Open Office one please?

Thanks

See [Solved] Windows 10 bottom task bar which seems very similar to your problem.

I upgraded to 4.1.13 Yesterday and miss seeing Open Office Seagulls icon bottom of this Windows 10 along with other links to Chrome, filezilla, EW4 and a few others.
What I see is what looks like a page with right upper corner bent just bit.

Then it looks like a LibreOffice icon.
If you open the Windos Start menu and start typing "open" for example, do you get the bue orb?

My previous post has a link to the fix that worked in the past. Does that fix no longer work?

I cannot show OpenOffice logo of 2 Seagulls in bottom task bar using Windows 10 and logo was there before I upgraded to current version OO.
Oh, and I do not own a pet Seagull or have a Seagull tattoo.

I haven't set up a Windows task bar in many years, but if your link is to OpenOffice Writer, by default you will get its icon. I vaguely recollect that one could adjust the setup to use the icon from some other library or program.

The Icon from the OpenOffice application that starts the splash screen is the two seagulls (is it soffice.exe?), and you might select the icon from that. I cannot give more explicit instructions as I haven't used Windows for many years.

Alternately, you could set your taskbar to point to that, but you will then have to click on the Writer item in the splash screen to start Writer.

Did you follow the steps and select the Seagulls icon? If so, did you restart the computer after selecting the Seagulls icon? If you don't tell us what you did, then we can't tell you what you did wrong.

Where do you take that?
The procedure that should work (tested on my Windows 10 machine without actually changing the icon, but I do see the change icon button): How do I change Taskbar Icon picture.

Please add [Solved] at the beginning of the title in your first post (top of the topic) with the 🖉 button if your issue has been fixed.

No. I'm asking what you did, not telling you what to do. Did you find the instructions and follow them? I'm not going to repeat the instructions here since I don't have Windows to verify the instructions.

Especially since I gave the link you had provided and tested it on my Windows 10 machine.

Guess what?
I do a search for Openoffice and task bar icon and find...
https://nicksnettravels.builttoroam.com ... bar-icons/
I read it, follow instructions and now I have a blue circle with 2 Seagulls one above other in my windows 10 centered task bar and when I click on it up pops OpenOffice 4.1.1.13.
It's nice to see Openoffice Seagulls link again.

It looks like Microsoft has added an extra step. According to the old instructions, you could right-click the icon and select Properties. In the new instructions you have to right-click the icon, then right-click the program name and select Properties.

That's exactly what is said in the link you had provided Bill, and that I "isolated" above:
First right click the Taskbar shortcut then in the options that open again right click the icon, now select properties short cut tab and Change Icon button, make a selection and click Ok. If the desired icon is not in selection then browse.

First, do not right click the taskbar icon because attempting to change it does not work. You must first change the DESKTOP ICON.
1. Go to the Desktop Open Office Icon and right-click it, then select "Properties".
2. Select "Change Icon" then select any available icon OTHER THAN THE DEFAULT that has the square shape at the first position.
►Note that the sought after icon (two birds with blue background) has two forms in the icon pick list - one square and one round.
3. Select the blue icon with the round rather than square shape. Attempting to use the square icon is the source of the problem.
4. After you have the new DESKTOP ICON, go ahead and right-click it and select "Pin To Taskbar".

I have approved your post because it may provide an alternate possibility but I don't see why right clicking the task bar icon doesn't work. It has been tested in previous posts.

Please note that I am using the latest update of Open Office (4.1.14) and also the latest update of Windows 10. Upon updating Open Office, the taskbar icon was as many have described (a blank rectangle). May I suggest that these recent updates may be causing the blank icon issue and that past "solutions" may no longer work. Hence the reason I have taken the trouble to make an accurate post. Thank you for approving.

Is this the official Apache OpenOffice or the Microsoft Store OpenOffice? It's my understanding that there is no option to change the taskbar icons for Microsoft Store Apps. If you have the official AOO installed, is there no longer an option to change the taskbar icon?

I am using the offical Appache OpenOffice 4.1.1.4. Yes, there is an option with AOO to change the taskbar icon. However, it does not work. Hence the reason for my post as an alternative solution.
