[Solved] AOO 4.1.9 Only Recognizes 32Bit Java

Post by genesoo77072 »

I was having problems with Java not being seen in OO 4.1.9.
I have both the latest JRE(64 Bit) 8.0.2910.10 and JDK(64 Bit) 16.0.1 installed.
After searching the net, I found a recommendation to install Java(32 bit).

I had difficulty finding a 32bit version since current JREs and JDKs appear to be 64bit only.
The following file was downloaded and installed jre-8u291-windows-i586.exe.

Once I installed this level of Java, OO 4.1.9 was able to see this.

Going forward, this needs to be addressed by development soon that 64 bit Java is supported.
Otherwise, if Java takes down this and other 32bit releases, users will not be able to use Java.

I just checked and Oracle still lists JDKs for Windows in both 32-bit and 64-bit. Java.com still lists JREs for Windows in both 32-bit and 64-bit. If you have 64-bit Windows, the online install defaults to 64-bit. You have to download the 32-bit version manually.

See also Troubleshooting Open/LibreOffice and Java which has a link to https://adoptopenjdk.net/ where you can get 32 bit (x86) versions.

David, Thanks for posting the link to OpenJDK. It was easier to find their 32 Bit package rather than finding Oracle's. I would suggest to the developers to support both 64 and 32 bit versions as soon as possible. I also run LibreOffice and I know it supports the 64-bit versions of Java.

Because LibreOffice has both 32 and 64 bit versions for Windows; as mentioned in my link above AOO only has a 32 bit Windows version. The bitness of Java must match the bitness of the installed AOO or LO.

David, Thanks for the answer. That leads to the following question. AOO has 32 and 64 bit versions for Linux. Why is it only 32bit for Windows?

Because OpenOffice is 32 bit because of lack of developers and needs 32 bit Java. You can install it alongside the 64 bit Java in Windows.
