How transfer saved files to new laptop

I have 250 saved Open Office files on my existing laptop and would like to know the best way to transfer them to a new laptop.
I'm using OO version 4.1.5 now.
Can I download version 4.1.9 on my new laptop and could the transfer still work?
Or, should I upgrade to version 4.1.9 on my old computer before attempting the transfer?

The files are independent from OpenOffice and do not need OpenOffice to copy. Copy them in the same way you would any other file; possibly to a removable storage device that you can then attach to your new machine.
