Issues opening a document

Post by paddyattitude »

Hi Guys,

I'm having an issue opening a document.
When I click on it it looks like it's opening but then Open Office crashes.
It's only doing it with this document.
Others open fine.
Once OO has crashed I still see the .~lock.SQUAT1986.doc# file in the folder like the file is still opened
Any idea?
You reckon I can get it back?

Cheers

With OpenOffice closed, you may delete the .~lock.SQUAT1986.doc# file. It has no useful content, having merely an editing lock.

Try this: start a blank OpenOffice Writer document, and try /Insert /File :SQUAT1986.doc. If that inserts, immediately Save in .odt format.

Then your document may be damaged. Place it on a USB key, observing your operating system's USB removal protocols and try it on another computer.

I'm really pissed off about this. Not only does it crash the solution that was posted for I can't do. So the download for 4.1.5 is not even compatible for windows 10! It doesn't even come up as one of my options all though the initial download website says for windows 10! WHAT! So after installing and having it lock up and crash on a regular basis (more than once a day!) I went to my control panel maybe uninstall and reinstall, I also have the option to modify and repair. I CAN'T DO ANY OF IT! I get a ERROR message that says I have to do something with quick start ?????? I'm just to the point that it would be easier to go back to MS Office. UHG!

Quickstarter is a service that is in the system tray (next to the clock). Click the blue and white gulls icon and exit it before repairing.
But as said above, if you want to use AOO, then use its native format.
If you need to work in .doc, then stick to MS Office, or go to LibreOffice.

I have no idea. The Task Manager in Windows 10 never told me "it's not a good file". Maybe you need to ask about that message on a Windows 10 forum.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to help when reported error messages don't show up in Google searches. That usually means that the error message has been paraphrased instead of being a literal error message. That means that those who are trying to help have to guess about the problem.
