Looking for a replacement for Outlook

Hi,

I am working on a business case for moving an organisation of 3000 users from MS Office to OOo. We have no doubt in that OOo will be sufficient in functionality, but I have no idea how you do corporate mail with OOo.

If I understand it correctly the only way to use MS Outlook is to have MS Office, so what are the options?

Grateful for help

There is no email component to OOo. There are open-source email programs though. Thunderbird is a popular one, and it has a calendar plug-in, and tasks, etc.

Thunderbird.

I believe there is an Evolution version for windows
http://www.dipconsultants.com/evolution/
which I understand is quite close to Outlook in features.

There is even a beta version of Kontact available
https://wiki.kolab.org/index.php/Kontac ... uge-debug)
I have not tried it so can not vouch for it but I use Kontact on Kubuntu and will be looking at this myself for some of my windows users. (I prefer Kontact over outlook so I have high hopes for the windows version)

thunderbird works quite well, with the plugins mentioned above, and can also work with gpg for encryption and signing of mail.

Do you just need an email client or a whole email/calendar/tasks/address book/notes suite? Mail clients are like sand at the beach, Thunderbird, Outlook Express/Windows Mail, Opera, Eudora, …

The whole 9 yards is indeed in Evolution, but Thunderbird has an addressbook and together with the lightning plugin you can do calendar.

Or you just go to Google and let your people have GMail, Google Calendar, Google Office Stuff and so on.

An Office Suite without an email client is simply unacceptable to me.

Yes there are standalone open source alternatives BUT until OpenOffice/ LibraOffice includes an email client then Microsoft will always be seen as the COMPLETE package and de-facto maintain a dominant operating system.

Developers please either write an email client or include an existing open source version in version 5.x

I detect some tribal "divide and rule" over existing open source suits so maybe give the integrated email client a new name e.g. "ePost" with a postage stamp icon

Thank you!!!

Developers do not base their priorities on requests in this forum. Rather, they use the "bug tracker", which takes feature requests as well as error reports.

Your request matches issue # 50845. Note that the request is 8 years old, and has received a total of two - 2 - votes from one - 1 - user, no comments and no duplicates.
If many users need something fixed, there should be both votes (from those who did a search first), comments (from those who want to detail their requirements) and duplicates (from those who didn't search).

If you want to encourage developers to work on this issue, you can register as a user in the bugtracker and vote for it (and also add a comment if you need additional functionality, or to explain why a standalone mail client is not adequate).
After voting/posting, do not hold your breath in anticipation! ;)
