Outdated links to download mirrors
Outdated links to download mirrors
Hi there,
I'm not sure whether I'm right in this forum for aoo website remarks (de project). I would like to encourage you to tidy up some web pages so that Apache OpenOffice doesn't look totally outdated and crazy to visitors.
What I experienced is: I was looking whether there is a new AOO portable version already available. As I'm german, I was directed by my search engine towards http://www.openoffice.org/de/downloads/oooportable.html, where a longer text redirected me to http://de.openoffice.org/downloads/download.html which automatically redirects again to http://www.openoffice.org/de/downloads/mirror.html. On that page, there is a dozen of german language mirror servers (both ftp and http) - but none of them even offers a 4.x version of openoffice at all let alone any portable version (at least I did'nt find one). They have only 3.x versions.
In my opinion the pages are only interesting for special use (friendly interpretation), but should not decourage standard AOO users. Maybe the (german) AOO website should be trimmed down to easier get the pages up to date. In my case there would be http://www.openoffice.de/openoffice_dow ... rtable.php or http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable to show that there isn't a 4.1.3 portable version yet.
I even would encourage you to delete the http://www.openoffice.org/de/downloads/oooportable.html page and some related (see the side bar) -- or you keep them for historic reason but move them to a group with a header saying "archive" instead of "Apache OpenOffice 160,000,000+ downloads! AOO 4.1.3 available" (which gives the illusion of a current page).
Thank you very much for all the work related to OpenOffice!
FZiegler

Re: Outdated links to download mirrors
The AOO website is indeed a real mess.
However, if you check the official pages, you will see in the right column of the download page http://www.openoffice.org/download/ that there is an Additional Resources section with a link to 3rd party ports and distributions that leads to http://www.openoffice.org/porting/index.html with 2 possibilities for portable versions. They are still in 4.1.2 however. But for the upgrade, it needs to be done by the teams (not related to AOO).

@ Villeroy: OK. I understand that there are more and other things to be done than polishing the surface. Maybe it's only in my feeling and my limited experience that AOO is the more stable version of the two concurrent projects (I've never worked with them on an up-to-date OS - only Win7). As long as there is data compatibility, I will switch between AOO and LO - depending on what I need. After my last book project, I know that I won't work again within LO with a bigger file of 100+ MB and a number of images. I really hope that AOO will survive. - On the other hand, I love quite a few features of LO. That's exactly what was the danger when the two projects split in 2010: people to be caught between the stools.
@ Hagar Delest: Maybe it was a side entrance I was entering. But that's a bit of what I meant: being welcoming to newbies would be nice (I'm not - I will mostly find my way through). You've got to be lucky if you are a newbie to find OpenOffice Portable if you don't already know that AOO Portable is 3rd party. But now I understand that it's not question of attracting newbies at the moment. I just thought it could be useful to name the problematic pages.

At least with the French results of a Google search, the first hits are pretty relevant for OpenOffice portable.

Note that you can also send a mail to the dev mailing list. I don't know if there is someone still in charge of the AOO site. In the forum, we are just users like you trying to help other users.

I see. That's why I started saying:
Thank you, Hagar Delest! So, I've got to switch to the dev mailing list for my task.
Indeed, I wanted to contact the website makers (german part). So, I'm sorry for your troubles trying to help me with practical tipps. So the forum "site feedback" is only for "forum site" feedback, right? I wasn't sure about that.FZiegler wrote:I'm not sure whether I'm right in this forum for aoo website remarks (de project)

Yes. But some areas of the AOO websites points to this forum also. So that's not a bad place anyway since it does not really fit any other section.FZiegler wrote:So the forum "site feedback" is only for "forum site" feedback, right? I wasn't sure about that.
