Nothing special in November.
Except that the forum software for IP identification is still not correctly configured so we can't have the figures for the most active users online count (index page).

If we remove the spam accounts, we will reach the 60,000 users early next year.
RoryOF wrote:I analysed the Forum statistics over a 25 day period in November 2013 (including Thanksgiving in USA, Last Thursday of Nov, always a slack period).

These average 100 postings per day, 21 new topics per day and 22 new Users per day. These are in line with my analysis at end September 2013.

For the first time since a while, we are facing a major problem (or even 2):
  • The mail notification is off by default for new users. The setting has also been reset to off for former accounts!
  • The lack of active sysadmin (admin having access to the server) is highly prejudicial since we have to live with the problem above until a sysadmin can fix it.
For the mail notification problem, I remember having to check again the option (see: Check the mail notification that I've made global announcement) few days ago. I can't say for sure when but perhaps less than 3 months ago (I remember having to reactivate this setting, I didn't thought it could be a global change). Perhaps linked to the vm update in late September.
It means that new and also former users may not notice that their posts have been replied if they only wait for a notification.
I've changed the setting in many accounts already (first all who had not yet any replies to their posts, then all recent posters). This will have to be done as long as the sysadmin problem is not fixed too.
For the record, I've opened a discussion on the dev mailing list: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev@openoff ... 15392.html
NB: for those interested in the sysadmin issue: http://www.mail-archive.com/dev@openoff ... 15345.html and http://www.mail-archive.com/dev@openoff ... 15338.html

Else, figures are rather in line with the rest of the year:

Nothing special this month.
Some admin task ahead to improve the forum and set back the mail notification by default for new user (and reset it for all former users).

I'm rather late for the monthly report!
We hit a good mark: 60,000 real users (that means total users registered minus spam accounts). It was during April.

In Canada, a community of 60,000 qualifies as a city, as opposed to a village or town... ie: We have a CITY! :)

That is variable from province to province. In Saskatchewan a community of 5,000 qualifies as a city.

I didn't say that it had to be 60,000. I know of many communities that are classified as "cities" by the provincial and/or federal governments, and have far fewer than 60,000.

Forum statistics: April 2014

Post by Hagar Delest »

Slightly less spammers in April.
RoryOF noted statistics for five complete days last week; over this period they averaged as follows:
103 posts per day
19 topics per day
20 new members per day
This is rather in line with previous figures but it may change. It is noticeable that activity has increased since the mail notification by default that has been reactivated for new users.

The only event worth noting this month was the mail outage. it clearly had an impact on the activity:
- No mail notification could be sent when new post were made
- No registration mail could be sent for new users

Statistics are monitored by RoryOF for 14 days from 12/05/14 to 26/05/14 are almost the same as last month:
Postings per day: 101
New Topics per day: 19
New Users per day: 19
With the mail outage, this would have been a slight increase compared to last month.

An interesting record was also hit: number of users online was 359 on Fri May 23, 2014 7:01 pm (Paris time)

Standard month with however a very busy day spotted by RoryOF, in the middle of the summer:
209 postings in the 24 hours from 06:20 on 23 July to 06:20 on 24 July (UK time)!
The forum header was changed (beginning of the month), more in line with the other areas of the AOO project.

Nothing special this month.
I made a mistake for August, I used the wrong shortcut to get the solved topics, hence the step seen for the green series in the previous post. I've corrected it by taking the average, based on Sept. and July values.

Perhaps it is just my imagination but it looks to me like the rate of spam is decreasing. If you have the time, could you graph spam/day for the last couple of years? I'll gladly make the graph if you can send me the data.

Not at home this weekend but will do.
I remember that the rate was rather low in October (1.8 per day IIRC) and it's rather steady since the antispam measures, not more than 4 per day.

As promised, here is the chart for the spammers:
Spam.png
I've set a smaller scale for the rate to have a better view since most of the range is lower than 5 spammers per day.
The dot out of the scale is 63. The high numbers in early 2012 were the reason why we implemented the counter-measures.
The good news is that little by little, the rate is slightly decreasing.

Well, I just checked and it it may be something else because I remember having seen something about kitchens but it was in the signature and not an URL in the profile as usual. So eventually, kitchencabinet may have stopped.
But spammers rate was 2.8 account per day, back to its standard level.

I noticed a sharp drop in the number of new posts per day over the last few weeks or months. In the past we'd get as many new posts in a day as the Apache user mailing list in a month. Maybe most regular questions can now be solved by searching the forum, or maybe something else is going on.
