Google Search - No Results

Post by Bill »

Is anyone else seeing "No Results" from Google when searching for recent topics on the forum? For example, searching for

Code: Select all

"text lines are overwriting margins" site:forum.openoffice.org
returns "No Results" from Google, but DuckDuckGo, Bing and Yahoo all find the topic posted today on the forum. Similar searches for other topics posted in the last few days produce similar results. Google is still finding older topics. I get the same results using Firefox 76 and Chromium 81.

There was a recent query on the Dev ML from Google about the robots preventing searching. I cannot recollect if or how it was resolved.

A different query in that format worked OK for me using Google (just now tested).

Same results. Works in Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo. Doesn't work in Google.

Same as Bill (either with /en or without).
On the dev ML, it was said that the configuration file had not been changed in 11 years and that everything was OK: https://www.mail-archive.com/dev@openof ... 37971.html

The last reply to the topic on the dev ML was posted May 12. That's about the time this problem seems to have started.

I've reloaded the Board Index page several times, and Google [Bot] has shown up every time as an online user. I have not yet seen a bot from any other search sites.

This could hamper users' attempts to search for solutions since most probably have Google as their default search engine. I'm switching mine to DuciDuckGo.

I have seen a number of search bots on forum, often three or four, but less of recent days, now that you mention it. I also switched to DuckDuckGo some time ago since starting to use Opera as browser.

That's a query that should return many old topics, but there are no topics on the first page of hits that were posted recently. I'm only concerned about recent posts.

Google search in French seems to drop out six days ago, in Italian five days ago, and in English about 23rd April - try a search for openoffice and the site specifier

Code: Select all

'encadrer un format de page' site:forum.openoffice.org
works for me. Gives the most recent hits first slot.

The only Issue I have found so far with Google Search engine, that forum.openoffice.org does not give any statistics on search words.
And that I do not need.

I could not firgure the Issue. I am watching now. So if you find anything I'll know.

I've been trying to pin down when the problem started on the English forums. There may be two different dates, one for topic titles and the other for topic message content. Searching for

Code: Select all

"Document font suddenly shrinks to unreadable size" site:forum.openoffice.org
finds the topic posted 12 May 2020 at 4:12 pm Central Daylight Time, but searching for the message content

Code: Select all

"nothing fixes it except setting the type" site:forum.openoffice.org
does not find the topic. So far, I haven't been able to find any topics posted later than this one using Google.

I've tried some searches for text strings copied from messages posted on the English Writer forum, and Google did not return matches for any messages posted after 14 Mar 2020. Google returned "No Results" for those search strings and displayed links to messages containing similar text that were posted on or before 14 Mar 2020. DuckDuckGo displayed the link to the message containing the search string.

Weird, because bots continue to come:

Code: Select all

Google [Bot] 19 Mai 2020 08:48
Majestic-12 [Bot] 19 Mai 2020 07:59
Google Feedfetcher 19 Mai 2020 07:54

Yes, I see the bots, but the test is what a search actually reveals. I suspect that, as with many things, the virus has upset staffing rotas and some maintenance is not being done.

New information:
A topic search for

Code: Select all

"openoffice writer file is not responding" site:forum.openoffice.org
returns "No results" from Google. This topic has 4 messages posted on 7 May 2020. This blows up my assumption that the problem with topic searches started on a specific date about 13 May 2020.

Looking more closely at some topic searches which did work in Google, I realized that the links Google displayed were links to the Applications/Active Topics list, not to the actual topic. DuckDuckGo displays links to the topics.
