MS pirates?

Installed OO 3-1. Worked, and made a spreadsheet. But installed MS Office (requiring purchase to enable) hijacked the spreadsheet, and wouldn't open it without purchase of MS.
On my last (deceased) 'puter, Excel and Open Office coexisted fine. That was an Acer with Windows 10 (nee w-7). Computer and Excel were both about 5 years old. The new 'puter is an HP W-10, two months old with said installed MS Office (not enabled until purchase. Has an MS gotten highly aggressive? (Note this is an HP, not a Dell.)
Advice appreciated. Please speak slowly, in English. I'm not a nerd.

You need to change the default application to open the file.

That's completely normal. If you had installed LIbreOffice, then LibreOffice would have "hijacked the spreadsheet". When you install more than one program that can open a file type, then the last program installed often becomes the default program for opening that file type. Then it's up to the user to change the default program. A Google search for "set default programs in Windows 10" will find the instructions for changing default programs on many Web sites. If you don't want to learn how to do it, then reinstall OpenOffice.

OpenOffice 3.1 has been obsolete for years. It is not compatible with the current versions of Java and may be a security risk. The current version is Apache OpenOffice 4.1.4.
