[Solved] Data do not populate in separate columns

Post by sonadam »

Hello,
I downloaded data in the Open Office Calc and the columns did not populate, that is all the data is crammed into the first column. You can see below that all the data is under the Date,"Daily" column. I don't know much about spread sheets but I was told that this should not be happening. Any help available? Thanks, Adam

Date,"Daily Production (kWh)"," End of day meter reading (kWh)"

Where did the data come from?
Is it in a .csv file? If so then you need to specify the Comma separator option in the Text Import Dialog
I would also recommend ensuring the Detect Special Numbers option is checked.
There is the ability to specify the format for the date column, but looking at the data you supplied you shouldn't need to specify this in order for the dates to be read correctly.

Thanks a lot Russell, I did not have the "Comma Separated" box checked. It worked.

As a side comment, note that those very long numbers may not be exactly represented in Calc (nor in most other popular spreadsheet apps). I assume that the long strings of decimals actually represent rounding errors (they all show a long series of either zeroes or nines), and only 3 decimals or so are significant. In that case, there is no problem with handling the given data correctly.

In the unlikely case that all decimals are significant, you need to use different software to calculate correctly. Calc precision limit is approximately 15 decimal digits.
