Do you mean: compared to commercial products?

The Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice are cost free, opensource softwares.

The AOO and LO use an International Standard file format: Open Document Format.

OpenOffice is an office software suite that includes a word processor (Writer), a spreadsheet (Calc), a slide presentation creater (Impress), a drawing editor (Draw), an equation editor (Math), and a database front-end (Base). It's intended to provide an alternative to Microsoft Office's Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc. For advanced uses the Microsoft products have more features, but most average users find everything they need in OpenOffice or the forked version LibreOffice.

Major advantages are that OpenOffice and LibreOffice are cross-platform (Mac, Windows, and Linux), free for all use (person, commercial, etc.), and guarantee all future updates will be freely available.

Bear in mind that, no matter what you may read, OpenOffice is not (repeat: NOT) an MS Office clone. If you insist on full MS Office compatibility you should buy MS Office. It can however handle most non-complex forms of MS Office formats; it is best to work always in OpenOffice's native formats.
