OpenOffice is deleting my saved data on recovery
OpenOffice is deleting my saved data on recovery
This has happened a lot, but the absolute worst just happened to me. I have spent the last 2 days working on a document due in 30 minutes, and OpenOffice suddenly crashed and did it's recovery process. I save regularly, I would say every 10 to 15 minutes or so, and I have since the '90s when things were REALLY iffy computer wise. Now, when it did it's recovery, it brought the document back to 2 days ago about 10 minutes into my 2 days of work! It's all just gone, including everything I had saved. I cannot figure out any way to un-recover the document, and now I will fail this MAJOR assignment... and I need to make sure this does not happen again!!!
This is a major issue I have with OpenOffice, and someone needs to be aware that it is happening. I am not sure where to post this since this actually involves every aspect of OpenOffice. This project was using both Writer and Calc, and both crashed and data was errased.

There is no version 4.3.1.2 of Apache OpenOffice. The current version is 4.1.1. Where did you get your "OpenOffice 4.3.1.2"?

I was using an earlier version of OO and it did the exact same thing! I lost 4 current files in the 'recovery" process. So I downloaded OO 4.1.1. So far so good.

Re: OpenOffice is deleting my saved data on recovery
You should examine your method of working to establish why OpenOffice is constantly needing to recover your files. Normally a file only needs recovery after a program or system crash, both of which should be rare to non-existent on any modern operating system and computer. It is possible that you are shutting down your computer too speedily. The file structure of OpenOffice is complex and takes some little time to construct and write. Close your file and then OpenOffice, then give some extra seconds while you gather your papers and pens for the software/hardware write buffers to clear before powering off your computer. The few extra seconds will be much less than the time needed to rewrite the critical file, whose loss will eventually be inevitable. I regularly handle large files, sometimes of a million or so words, and by such care have not lost a file in eight years of regular work.

I am not sure what Libreoffice is exactly, but what I am using specifically says it is openoffice.thomasjk wrote:He is running Libreoffice.

Re: OpenOffice is deleting my saved data on recovery
This would not be the problem, this has happened a few times and there are times where it happens to documents I had only been working on for a few hours where I had not shut down my computer at any given time. I save regularly, not just at the end of the day, but every 5 to 15 minutes. So it does not seem that would be the issue.RoryOF wrote: It is possible that you are shutting down your computer too speedily.

LibreOffice is a product which falls under the generic term "openoffice". The term "openoffice" does not identify the product. Select Help > About OpenOffice. What is the actual name of the product shown on the About... window?Thedd wrote:I am not sure what Libreoffice is exactly, but what I am using specifically says it is openoffice.thomasjk wrote:He is running Libreoffice.

Re: OpenOffice is deleting my saved data on recovery
I'm having the exact same problem. Running 4.1.1 on Windows 8. This is also not the first time it's happened to me.
I have autosave turned on and I manually save very often because OpenOffice crashes all the time, and despite the autosave, it will typically lose everything up to the last manual save. Today, I was creating a number of new documents (about 10), which were all open at the same time. I was involved in serious research and was manually saving as I created new documents and added to them. Just now, I created another new file and went to save it under a new name, when the window stopped responding. Clicking anywhere on the untitled document resulted in the dinging noise. This happens sometimes when a dialog window gets stuck behind the document window and I can't access it. I believe that's what happened here. I could still access my other documents, so I began to go through them individually to resave and close them before restarting the program. By this point, OpenOffice was severely lagging, and after successfully closing out a few documents, it froze and then crashed all together. When I restarted the program and it went through the recovery process, I got error messages for every single file, including "File Not Found" messages on about half. lWhen asked to select a location to save temporary backup files, I input a new path to create a "temp" subfolder within the folder I was working in. The progress bar indicated that files were being saved somewhere, and then the program reopened all the documents. Only 90% of them were completely blank, including ones that I had just manually saved and closed out prior to restarting. Documents that had been created and saved multiple times since yesterday. So I went to look for those temp files that are created, the ones that add %%% to the file name. But the new temp folder was never created, and the temp files are nowhere to be found. So here I sit, looking at a bunch of blank documents that represent at least 15 hours of work. Just gone. I do all my work on OpenOffice, and in this case, I've lost two days of very important research that could change the outcome of my life. I've just lost all trust in this program, even saving can't save me, and I don't know what to do to get my weekend back.

Re: OpenOffice is deleting my saved data on recovery
Have you checked the backup folder of your profile?
I've have tried to warn the dev list several times about the save issue but it is not enough reproducible to make them take that into account.
I think that the save process is less secure than it used to be in the past (2.x old days). You can ask the dev mailing list by explaining what you went through.
Good luck.
