Access denied to files

My Dell Latitude laptop switched off due to Power reversal problem on 06.09.2013. On reporting the matter to DELL, they replaced the mother board, heat sync, touch pad, etc. on 14.09.2013. Since my laptop has been restored, I am unable to open any of files with extension .doc, .xls, Notepad, etc which were saved prior to the time problem occurred in laptop. Please note that I have not installed Microsoft office in my laptop, the version of Open Office is 3.4.1.

Kindly advise how to resolve the problem as all my work is stuck up.

Are the files actually present on the computer, or merely listed in OpenOffice's /File /Recent files list?

Edit: Also, can you start OpenOffice directly, and make, save and reopen a new file? It can be trivial in content. This is simply a test of OpenOffice's functionality on your computer at present.

"Access denied" means that your user account doesn't have permission to open the files. You can take possession of the files, then change the permissions.

Troubleshoot "access denied" when opening files or folders

At System level (i.e. with OpenOffice closed) Enable Viewing of Hidden and System files, look at the file directory and see are they marked read-only. If so, change their Properties by unchecking the Read-Only checkbox. If there are files with names like

or .ods etc
delete these. They should be very small files of a few hundred bytes, whereas main files will be a minimum of about 7KB.
