Is there an open office component that can act in similar fashion to MS Publisher?

Write, the OpenOffice word processor, can handle most document layouts of reasonable complexity; I have no experience of MS Publisher, but have used PageMaker and InDesign: these offer more complex layout facilities than OpenOffice Writer, but I have found Writer suitable for my needs over the past six or so years. As it is a free download, you can try it at no cost. You will need to migrate any existing MS Publisher files to a format Writer can read (probably .doc) before scrapping Publisher. You may be able to convert using http://www.zamzar.com, who offer a free online conversion service. Note that, in all format conversions, there may (almost certainly will be) formatting irregularities which will need to be adjusted in the new program to match what was intended.
