It is a similar thing like the flash applet in your browser. Youtube embeds objects in their pages which require a flash plugin installed on your system, so the contents can be shown in a subwindow within the browser window.
OLE embeds some other application's window in your document. If the other application is not installed, the window remains empty. The data to be displayed by that other application may be linked to some other file or they may be embedded in the carrier document.
