All Word documents converted to Notepad

All my Microsoft Word Document files were converted to OO notepad upon downloading and installing OO 3.3. There were no prompts or warnings that this would happen. All formatting, headers, footers were lost. All my document formatting is now commandeered by 00 3.3 and it will only allow the notepad format. I am still using windows XP pro as some of my periphereals do not have windows 7 drivers. I cannot get a properly formatted document out of my machine anymore. I am using an older version of MS office-2000. Spreadsheets are unaffected.

K, NP, I just didn't see the little pull down tab when you go into properties. I can pull the document out in document format. Still, having seen everything converted into 'notepad' was not good for my blood pressure as it happened 12 hours before leaving on an international trip!!!

None of your files have actually been converted until you save them from the new program and overwrite the existing formatting. They are being displayed in a different program, which shows them differently to the original program in which they were written, but the information is still there. Open them using your version of MS Office - do it the long way by opening MS Office, then / File / Open and you'll see that they open correctly (unless you have saved them out of OpenOffice). Note that the MS Office file formats import/export have been reverse engineered. Are you sure that you want to keep working in these formats? They have not been designed to be compatible with anything else than MS Office. Better use the native OOo format (ODF) and export when needed only.
