[Solved] Java Runtime Environment

Post by shadowbj »

In Database - get error message that says "Selected JRE is defective - Please select another version or install a new JRE and select TOOLS-OPTION-OpenOffice.org-Java". Where do I get another version of JRE.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

When you go to this test page, it will check for the presence of Java on your computer, and if Java is not found or your version is out of date, the page will prompt you to download the latest version for your computer.

Note that Java comes in both 64-bit and 32-bit flavors, but OOo only needs the 32-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE).
OOo 3.3.0, Windows 7 64-bit SP1, planning to add LibreOffice after a bug-fix version of 3.4 is released.

Thanks aqualung - "this test page" for the MacOS to go to Apple Software Updates - which finds no updates for JRE. Any other suggestions?

A recent Java upgrade broke the use of Java in older versions of OOo. Upgrade to OpenOffice.org 3.3 and Java will work.

Are you sure that you enabled Java in Preferences - Java, and that you actually selected a version of Java to use?

@aqualung

"It *only* needs the 32-bit JRE". Actually it doesn't seem to recognise the 64-bit versions, so you need both. (OO 3.3.0 on Win7 64-bit)
OpenOffice 3.4.1 4.0.0 4.1.0 on Win7 64-bit, 3.3.0 on XP

OOo will not work with the 64bit jre. Its a 32bit app and requires the 32bit jre.

"OOo will not work with the 64bit jre. Its a 32bit app and requires the 32bit jre."

This information needs to be clearly stated to the user of OpenOffice 3.4.

Better still include Java with OpenOffice 3.4
OOo 2.4.X on Ms Windows XP + Fedora Core
