Post by Redfordl »

i am creating a sign and i will be using letters that need to be at about 400% magnification or nearly 4 1-4 inches in height. or at about 200 font. size. I note oo only goes to 96. how can i accomplish this so i can create these large letters and then print them out at this large size or 400% mag.. Thanks.

The size selection list only goes to 96, but in Writer, you can type a larger value into the Format > Character Size box, and it will accept it. Same considerations apply to Calc cell formats and such.

If you select the text in question / Format / Character will allow you type in 200 or 400 pt size and the type will change to that. The dropdown only goes to 96 pts as you say, but you can directly enter other values. You will also need to change your Page size.

It shouldn't revert to a size other than what you entered unless you move the cursor with the arrows or the mouse. You can either enter the size in the box on the formatting toolbar or in the Format > Character dialog, then type "OFFICE" (or whatever). Or enter the desired text, select it, then enter the size in either of the two places.

Interesting. I can definitely do this in the Format > Character dialog but I can't do it on the Formatting toolbar.
I type word, select it and click into Formatting toolbar. If I start with 12, change it to 200 and click the selected word (or press Esc) it reverts to 12.

That is the same behaviour I have always had with OOo. Using the box on the formatting toolbar allows only the sizes given in the drop-down list.

On OOo 3.3 on Win2k both the formatting toolbar drop-down and the /Format / Character / Font tab allow 400 point to be inserted; this holds and changes the target character size.

You may notice some problems with text at such a large size--it can overflow some internal font/character arithmetic.

Also, I find that the usual character spacing parameters (e.g. line spacing) that are part of the font are too large at large sizes and getting them to behave nicely can be a challenge.

If you also run into problems, you may want to use graphics text: make a text object in OOo Draw, then convert it into a pure graphic form that can be pasted into Writer and scaled however you want without the odd spacing problems. The down side is that you can't edit the text once it's converted into a graphic.

An operating system difference, I'm amazed. Tried with OOo3.1.1 under Vista and couldn't do it there either.

I was able to do this on Ubuntu as well, using OOo 3.3.
