Can someone tell me why I am getting what seems to be spam sent to my OO email address? This address was created specifically for registering OO.

Just so you know: this forum is just volunteers helping people use OOo. We don't speak for OO.org, Sun, Oracle, or anybody else.

Maybe someone here can give you some idea how your address might end up on a spammer's list; I feel quite sure that OO.org, nor anyone connected with the project is selling registration addresses, if that's what you're thinking.
 Edit: PS:
What site (Internet address) did you use when you registered OOo? Was it www.openoffice.org, or somewhere else? There are a lot of scam sites that "sell" OOo, and I would not doubt for a second that they would sell your address or send you scammy emails.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure I got it from www.openoffice.org. I went there to see how I could contact them about this and that brought me to this forum. I'm not sure how else I can contact OO

Cheers,

You can probably try webmasters@openoffice.org, as your complaint doesn't fit any other category.

Any "official" contact with the OOo leadership is done through email, most likely with a mailing list.

See http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html for links to all the various lists. floris_v's suggestion (webmasters@openoffice.org) looks like a good bet to me also.

Are you sure the mail wasn't get from your computer?, and verify your computer is free of spyware or any dangerous program.

Where exactly did you use that email address? Did you send emails to users@openoffice.org? or some other OOo mailing list? Was the address used only to register here on the Forum? The OOo Wiki? The main OOo site? The sun.com/oracle.com website? That kind of detail is important.

The main OOo site, Forum, Wiki and sun.com/oracle.com do not share user registration data with anyone... so your email address should not have "leaked" from those sources.

By the way... you've pasted the entire spam message you received into the forum here... and that message includes your email address (ie you didn't remove it from the text you pasted) so that has opened up an opportunity for that particular email address to be publicly visible. The Forum is indexed by search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc etc. and now that address shows up when you search for it.

I know, that's why I was so surprised to get spam and why I bothered to take the time to try and report it.

It is by far and away most likely that I got conned into downloading OO from a clone of the official site. I normally take care to avoid this sort of scam but I'm only human. On the other hand it would be terrible if I did get OO from the official site and there was a leak, hence my taking the trouble to investigate.

With regard to your questions, I know the web page that I got OO from asked me for an email address so I created one specifically for that page. I created a different one to register for this forum. I have not used either of them anywhere else. (Thanks for pointing out that I left my email address in the orginal post - it looks like a kind moderator has edited it for me.)

the web page that I got OO from asked me for an email address so I created one specifically for that page
When you download OOo from the official site http://www.openoffice.org you should not be required to enter an email address. You can simply download for whatever (supported) OS you're using and that's it.

If you're participating in some OOo project, you would have to create an account on OO.o. The OOo Forum, Wiki and main website unfortunately do not have a common user database, so you would have to create a separate account on each service you choose to use. None of these is mandatory to simply download OOo.

So... if you were asked to register or provide an email address when you downloaded OOo, you most likely got it from a non-standard 3rd party source. Many web sites redistribute OOo - some legitimately, some not so legitimately. If they've misused your email address, there's unfortunately nothing OOo can do about that, as they are a 3rd party site.

There are a lot of sites that misuse the fact that OOo is open source and freely available, and they get very creative about finding ways to convince people to part with information... email addresses, even credit card numbers. You can report scam sites in the OOo Issue Tracker http://www.openoffice.org/issues/enter_ ... nt=website (requires an OOo user account to submit an issue).
Thanks for pointing out that I left my email address in the orginal post - it looks like a kind moderator has edited it for me.
I was going to do that myself, but got distracted by stuff here in the office, and by the time I got back, someone had beat me to it :-)
