Opening MS Office 2007 files

Hi,

I just installed OO this afternoon. I have Vista, which I must say I am not happy with. I previously used XP at my office. My ex-boss gave me one of her licenses to use Outlook and Word which I cannot get to work on Vista. Not a happy camper. (Although I have used PC's for many years in my office environments, I just personally switched from Mac to PC about a year ago--HP laptop which was preloaded with Vista and beginning to think I made a mistake...I have had more problems with the functionality in the past year than I had with my Mac in over 10. Have to deal with it now...) I have been downsized in my job and did not want to, frankly was irritated that I had to, nor could I afford to, buy a new Word program. So, not to use this as a complaint area just wanted to give some background, I heard about OO and was elated that there was something I could use to open all my resumes which I created with Word and can no longer edit (I have exhausted all my trials...).

So here I am and still cannot edit, nor can I even open now, my resumes. The only thing I can think of is possibly copying and pasting the text from all my earlier Word documents into an OO format. Are there any other suggestions for me at this point or is that what I will need to do right now to edit these docs? Or is there a conversion option?

Thanks all for your suggestions. I wholly support the OpenOffice concept and frankly don't even want to go back to MSO.

What problem are you having? Do you get a specific error message? If your resumes are in .doc format (which is standard in Word 95, 97, 2000, XP, and 2003), then you should have no problem. If you saved them in Word 2007 (.docx) format, then you have many options:

* Open the .docx file in Word 2007 and save in .doc format
* Use Office Compatibility Pack to convert .docx to .doc (which any OpenOffice.org can open)
* Use OxygenOffice, which has a well-integrated and easy to use support for .xlsx, .pptx, and .xslx
* Use Zamzar.com which converts .docx to .odt nicely
* Use OdfConverter without OpenOffice.org (or with any OpenOffice.org) in both Linux and Windows as a command line tool (for advanced users)
* Use Docx2Rtf which has some formatting problems with .docx

I don't see how your post is related to the original topic, so I will break out this conversation into its own thread. (Edit: it seems another moderator beat me to it.)

Please don't use the thread from other users if the issue is not absolutely identical. Hence I split the thread.

I guess you're trying to open MS Office 2007 files (I changed your title). See here: .docx files.

AndrewZ posted just before but I had split the thread before him :geek:

Ok, thanks for the suggestions; I will try those. Also, sorry about the posting category. Will be more careful in the future.

Thanks for your help.
